Listen here

Is the purpose of confessing our sins to make us feel bad or something else?

“Happy are they whose transgressions are forgiven, and whose sin is put away.”

– Psalm 32:1

The sermon, preached on the first Sunday of Lent, is based on Genesis 2:15-17, 3:1-7, Psalm 32, Romans 5:12-19, and Matthew 4:1-11.

Getting Back on Track

Is the goal of holiness and Lent to be more religious or something else?

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

– Matthew 6:19-21

Father Goodrich preached this sermon to a live Zoom congregation of St. John’s Episcopal Church, in Dubuque, Iowa. A winter storm moved the service to Zoom.

The sermon is based on Joel 2:1-12, 12-17, Psalm 103:8-14, 2 Corinthians 5:20b-6:10, and Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21. Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent.
